Workplace Charging Schemes: What Your Business Needs to Know About EV Charger Installations
Picture this: Your employees roll into the office parking lot, plug in their electric cars, and by lunchtime, their batteries are topped up. No more frantic searches for public chargers. No more “range anxiety.” Just seamless, cost-effective charging right where they spend most of their week. That’s the power of a workplace charging scheme—and if your business hasn’t considered it yet, now’s the time.
In this guide, we’ll break down everything you need to know about workplace charging schemes, from government incentives to picking the right EV charger installers. Let’s get started.
Why Workplace Charging Matters More Than Ever
Electric vehicles (EVs) aren’t a futuristic trend—they’re here. By 2035, over 20 countries plan to ban new petrol and diesel car sales. In the UK alone, EV registrations jumped 40% last year. But here’s the hitch: Public charging infrastructure isn’t keeping up. Long wait times, broken units, and crowded stations frustrate drivers.
That’s where workplaces step in. Offering EV charging isn’t just a perk; it’s becoming a necessity. Employees expect it. Sustainability goals demand it. And with government grants like the Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS), it’s cheaper than you think.
What Is the Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS)?
The WCS is a UK government initiative that cuts the cost of installing EV chargers at your business. You can claim up to £350 per socket, with a max of 40 sockets across multiple sites. Think of it as a discount for future-proofing your company.
Quick Facts & Takeaways
| Key Point | Details |
|---|---|
| Max Grant Per Socket | £350 (covers 75% of installation costs) |
| Eligibility | Businesses, charities, public sector |
| Installers Needed? | Yes—must be a [OZEV-approved installer](/services/electric-vehicle-homecharge-scheme-evhs-ozev-olev) |
| Deadline | March 2025 (subject to change) |
How to Choose the Right EV Charger Installers
Not all installers are created equal. You’ll need an OZEV-approved provider to qualify for the WCS grant, but there’s more to it. Here’s what to ask before hiring:
1. Do They Handle the Paperwork?
Applying for grants can feel like solving a Rubik’s Cube blindfolded. A good installer will manage the WCS application for you, saving hours of headaches.
2. What’s Their Track Record?
Look for installers with proven experience in commercial projects. A company that’s only done home setups might struggle with your office’s electrical grid.
3. Do They Offer Smart Chargers?
Basic chargers work, but smart units let you monitor usage, set pricing, and even integrate with solar panels. Future-proof your investment.
4. Can They Scale Later?
Start small, but pick an installer who can add more chargers as demand grows. Avoid getting locked into a system that’s hard to expand.
The Hidden Benefits You Might Not Expect
Sure, EV chargers keep your team’s cars running. But the ripple effects go further:
- Attract Top Talent: 67% of employees say sustainability perks influence job choices.
- Boost Brand Image: Clients notice green initiatives. It’s free PR.
- Cut Fleet Costs: If your company uses EVs, overnight charging beats petrol prices.
Common Mistakes Businesses Make (And How to Avoid Them)
❌ Underestimating Demand
Installing two chargers for a 200-person office? Bad math. Start with at least 5% of parking spots, then adjust.
❌ Ignoring Load Management
Your building’s power supply isn’t infinite. Smart installers balance charger usage to avoid tripping breakers.
❌ Skipping Maintenance Plans
EV chargers are hardy, but not indestructible. Regular check-ups prevent mid-workday meltdowns.
“How Much Does This Actually Cost?”
Let’s talk numbers. Say you install 10 chargers:
- Without WCS: ~£25,000
- With WCS Grant: ~£18,500
Savings: £6,500. Plus, many businesses offset costs by charging staff a small fee per kWh (still cheaper than public stations).
The Future of Workplace Charging
Wireless charging pads, vehicle-to-grid systems, AI-powered load balancing—the tech is advancing fast. Partnering with forward-thinking EV charger installers today means you’re ready for tomorrow’s upgrades.
Ready to Get Started?
Here’s your action plan:
- Check Eligibility: Confirm your business qualifies for the WCS.
- Audit Your Site: How much space do you have? What’s your power capacity?
- Get Quotes: Reach out to 3-4 OZEV-approved installers. Compare not just prices, but long-term support.
- Apply for the Grant: Your installer should help with this.
Final Thoughts
Workplace charging schemes aren’t just about cables and sockets. They’re about staying ahead in a world where electric mobility is the norm. By choosing the right EV charger installers and leveraging government grants, you’re not just powering cars—you’re fueling your company’s future.
So, what’s stopping you?
