EV Charger Installers Accredited by BS7671
EV Charger Installers Accredited by British Standard BS7671
Why BS7671 Accreditation is a Must for Your EV Charger Installer
So, you’ve got an electric vehicle (EV) and need a charger installed. Maybe you’re a homeowner, or perhaps you manage a business looking to add charging points. Either way, the installer you choose matters—a lot. Not all electricians are cut from the same cloth, especially when dealing with high-powered EV systems. That’s where BS7671 accreditation steps in. Let’s break down why this standard is non-negotiable for safe, compliant installations.
Quick Facts About BS7671-Accredited EV Installers
| What is BS7671? | The UK’s national standard for electrical safety, covering design, installation, and testing. |
| Why It Matters | Guarantees compliance with UK law and reduces risks like fire or electrical faults. |
| Grants & Schemes | Many require BS7671 accreditation (e.g., the Workplace Charging Scheme). |
| Other Accreditations | Often paired with NICEIC or IET certifications. |
What Exactly is BS7671?
BS7671 isn’t just a random code. It’s the rulebook for electrical installations in the UK, updated regularly to reflect new tech and safety research. Think of it as the electrician’s bible. For EV chargers—which demand high voltage and precise setup—this standard ensures everything from wiring to earthing meets strict safety benchmarks. Skip it, and you’re gambling with your property’s safety (and possibly your insurance coverage).
The Real Perks of Hiring a BS7671-Accredited Pro
- Safety First: Faulty installations can lead to fires or damaged vehicles. Accredited pros follow BS7671 to the letter, minimizing these risks.
- No Legal Headaches: Non-compliant work could void insurance or breach regulations. BS7671 adherence keeps you covered.
- Grant-Friendly: Schemes like the EVHS often require this accreditation for eligibility.
- Future-Proofing: These installers understand evolving tech, whether you’re adding solar integration or smart charging.
How to Spot a Genuine BS7671-Accredited Installer
A quick Google search isn’t enough. Here’s how to verify credentials:
- Check Certificates: Ask for proof of BS7671 training and current registration.
- Look for Partners: Many BS7671 pros also hold City & Guilds 2919 or NAPIT certifications.
- Read Reviews: Sites like Trustpilot or your local community boards can reveal red flags.
BS7671 and Government Grants: A Perfect Pair
Planning to claim the Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) grant? Or the home-focused EVHS? Both require installers with specific credentials, and BS7671 is often at the core. Choosing an accredited installer isn’t just smart—it’s cost-effective.
Beyond BS7671: Other Accreditations to Consider
While BS7671 is essential, pairing it with other certifications adds extra layers of trust. For example:
- MCS Accreditation: Critical for solar-integrated EV systems.
- RECC Membership: Signals commitment to renewable energy ethics.
